Abstract

Morgan Getchell and Steve Middleton discuss the differences between traditional media outlets making money through flat fees for advertising and online content catering to individual tastes through pay-per-click arrangements. Thanks to algorithms and the harvesting of personally identifiable data, the line between entertainment and news has become blurred beyond recognition, and people are increasingly exposed to content designed to cater to their individual beliefs and preferences. How can we access reliable information when it is so easy to retreat into a comforting echo chamber designed to envelop us completely?
