Abstract

Dr. Layne Neeper discusses the historical formation of the American literary canon, and some of the factors leading to the creation of a distinctively American (and male and white) voice. Sara Peyton describes some recent attempts to include different voices in the telling of the American story, including the 1619 project launched by the New York Times and the response in the form of the 1776 Commission. Both participants describe what it is like to engage with students around issues of American identity and history in an age of increased political polarization, where social media competes with expert opinion.
