In 1898, John E Madden sold his thoroughbred, Hamburg, to the King of Copper, Marcus Daly. He then bought a farm and named it Hamburg Place. Madden had several horses win the Kentucky Derby. Plaudit (1898), Old Rosebud (1914), Sir Barton (1919), Paul Jones (1920), Zev (1923), and Flying Ebony (1925). Five of his other horses won the Belmont Stakes, and Sir Barton was the first Triple Crown Winner.
