Lees Collegiate Institute started off as Jackson Academy (1883) before Central University purchased it (1891), making it the Jackson Collegiate Institute. It was renamed in honor of Mrs. S.P. Lee for her donations to the school (1897). It became part of the Central University of Kentucky (1901) before it became a church affiliated private two-year college (1996).
