Cora W. Stewart was born in 1875. She married Ulysses Grant Cary and began teaching (1895). She and Cary divorced in 1898. She was elected as superintendent twice (1901,1909). She married Alexander Thomas Stewart (1902), who she then divorced and remarried (1904) and then divorced again (1910). She became the first female president of the Kentucky Educational Association and created the first Moonlight School for adults in the same year (1911). Stewart was elected to the executive committee of National Education Association (1923). She won many awards and recognitions before retiring (1936). She passed away in 1958.
