Description
The Agricultural and Mechanical Collect of Kentucky (A&M) was established in 1865 as part of Kentucky University, a private university. It was in this year that John Bowman, the school's regent, bought the Ashland and Woodlands farms. Ashland housed the mechanical campus, college offices, a museum, and Regent Bowman's residence until 1878 due to A&M separating from the university to become an independent public institution. The cottage became a dorm for 16 men.
By 1880, A&M was often called the State College. A&M was established as a university in 1908 and was named State University. In 1916, legislature changed the name to University of Kentucky. The building was demolished in 1926, and a dedicated marker went up Aug. 25, 2015.
