Description
This is believed to be a party led by J.C.C. Mayo (1864-1914) up a creek bed, the best roadbed of the area, to purchase coal and timberlands. Mayo was one of the relatively few Eastern Kentuckians to cash in on the first land buying spree. By the 1880s, a large percentage of taxed lands was already in the hands of outsiders.
