Back of photo reads as follows: The 1859/60 Hawes' Kentucky State Directory lists some Eastern Kentuckians as planters. Tax lists suggest that slaves left the area gradually throughout the war. Throughout Appalachia slave labor was used in the iron industry. The slaves buried in the cemetery probably worked on the mini plantations that covered the bottomland just beyond the banks to the bigger streams. With the creation of Cave Run Lake, the remains from this unkempt graveyard, and others that would soon be covered by rising waters were transformed and consolidated. One suspects that many former slaves gravitated to nearby cities - Mt Stirling, Ashland, Winchester, Lexington,
