Colored school near Mahan Station, Whitley County, Kentucky circa 1910s.

Colored schools were created during the Reconstruction Era (1863-76). The schools were dismantled in 1954 after Brown v Board of Education. It was common in the 1930s for students to attend school barefoot. The 19th century and early 20th century (1800-1929), one room schools were common.
