Description

Sergeant William Sandlin (1890-1949) is often referred to as Kentucky's Sergeant York. Sgt. Sandlin captured six machine guns and killed twenty-four German soldiers in a single in WW1. Posed with Sgt. Sandlin in the postcard is John Shell (1788-1920), the world's oldest man who lived until he was 133*. The two men posed together for a picture at the 1919 Bluegrass Fair that would end up on a post card.

*Shell's claim to have lived that long has been investigated by the National Geographic Society, but was never verified.
