McRoberts Switchboard and Hello Girl, Letcher County, Kentucky, circa 1914.

'Hello Girl' referred to the women who worked the switchboard to connect calls during World War One. Their official name was Signal Corps Female Telephone Operations Unit, and they served in the US Army Signal Corps. They sent phone calls to France and Great Britian. The last Hello Girl was discharged in 1920.
