Coach Goebel Ritter (left, 1924-2004) and his Fleming-Neon basketball team in Letcher County, Kentucky circa 1950s.
Coach Ritter served as a marine during World War II (1939-1945), specifically the invasions of Guam (1941) and Iwo Jima (1945). After he came back from war, he played for the New York Knicks in the NBA from 1948-51. Afterwards, he returned to Kentucky to coach the Fleming-Neon, Hazard, and Whitesburg High School.
