Description
Cumberland Ave, Middlesboro, Kentucky. Photo circa 1900.
The most successful of 125 new town speculations between 1889-93, the platted city contained more buildings in 1890 that it did a decade later. Wide avenues and a variety of stock companies kept it before the people as did the suggestion that what would become Chicago World's Fair should be held here. The claim that the city would have 100,000 inhabitants by 1900 began to be taken seriously, but the 1893 Depression bankrupted the company.
