Matthew Bacon Sellers Jr., born on March 29, 1869, was a American inventor and scientist known for his pioneering work in aerodynamics and light aircrafts. On December 28, 1908, in Carter County, Kentucky, near Olive Hill, he made his first flight successful flight. It was also the first mechanized flight of an aircraft in the State of Kentucky. His innovations included patents of a retractable landing gear and several others related to aerial navigation. He contributed to numerous articles to scientific journals and magazines and was on a founding federal body that eventually became NASA. He died on April 5, 1932, in Irvington, New York after being exposed to a cold wind while flying kites with his two sons on Long Island Sound. He is buried at Ardsley-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York.
