The Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative was established in 1974 by a group of writers and activists from the Appalachian regions of Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. The organization was founded to support writers in their efforts to take control of the region’s identity and take action, individually and collectively, on the issues that impact the land and people.
