Abstract
The experiences of a prisoner detained at Camp Dent, a Union prison camp in Louisville, have been found in the faded pages of a long-forgotten diary. Five years ago, an alumnus of the University of Tennessee at Martin donated two diaries, several letters, and a cracked ambrotype of a relative, Private Van Buren Oldham, who fought in the Civil War. For over one hundred and thirty years the donor's family had kept these records in an old tin box, passing it on from generation to generation. In the spring of 1996 the great-grandson of Private Van Buren Oldham gave these historical documents to the university's new archival repository.
