Abstract

Larson (1988) analyzes the asymmetrical c-command relations between V-objects (DO and 10) as subject-complement (or subject-adjunct) asymmetries within VPs. In this squib, I extend this analysis to other VP-internal asymmetries, demonstrating that object-adverb asymmetries can also be explained as subject-nonsubject asymmetries. Through my analysis, I show that a VP with a V-object and a V-modifying adverbial has the D- Structure representation given in (1), where the object is the subject of the embedded VP and where the adverbial is the sister of the verb in V'.
