Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death in the nation and the state of Kentucky. Kentucky ranks sixth in the nation for the number of deaths due to heart disease. The US Department of Health and Human Services document, Healthy People (2020), described the importance of identifying preventable threats to health in order to increase the length and quality of our lives. The profession of nursing has long been associated with the sacrifice of personal health. Research indicates that nursing students experience higher levels of stress than non nursing students and some report stress severe enough to induce anxiety and depression. A service learning project was developed in partnership with the Gateway Cardiovascular Coalition as a strategy developed from evidence based practice which provides additional support to nursing students as they learn to provide care for others.
