The pattern is named after the island Martha's Vineyard, MA. Prior to 1602, the Wampanoag who lived there called the island Noepe, which mean 'land amid the waters'. On May 21, 1602, while aboard the ship Concord, Cpt Bartholomew Gosnold spotted the island. The name came from the wild grapes that grew on the island and his daughter, Martha. He also named the island Cape Cod the same year.
