Whig: Founded by Henry Clay to oppose Andrew Jackson. (1) a member of the British reforming and constitutional party that sought the supremacy of Parliament and was eventually succeeded in the 19th century by the Liberal Party. (2) an American colonist who supported the American Revolution, succeeded by the Republicans.
Whigs Defeat: after the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 when most of the Whigs in the north joined the anti-slavery Republican Party and the southern Whigs joined the nativist American Party and then the Constitutional Union Party.
