Abstract

Guy Carawan was an American folk musician and musicologist. He was famous for introducing the protest song "We Shall Overcome," to the American Civil Rights movement. Carawan sang and played guitar, banjo and the hammered dulcimer. He performed and recorded with his wife Candie. Carawan was originally from California, to southern parents. His mother was from South Carolina, his father from North Carolina. He moved to New York in the 1950's, that is when he became involved in the American Folk Music Revival.
