Abstract
Alphasmart devices are keyboards with some word processing ability such as spell check (Simpkins, 2023). The bare bones device thwarts students’ ability to browse for games or mismanage the default settings in Word. Alphasmart products can be used to assist with typing skills for the GED or ever-increasing technology-conversant jobs. The Alphasmart can either store information or via USB so an instructor can review student writings. Importantly, student work, such as a resume, may be printed from the device. Where it can only display a few lines of text at a time it would work well with students who get distracted by how much “white space” is on a page. This is a good, safe way of helping incarcerated students with keyboarding and extended response skills. The researchers plan to introduce Alphasmart devices to a small population of incarcerated students in order to improve both keyboarding and extended response skills. Results are pending.
