Abstract
Dr. Julia Finch discusses the history of equestrian war monuments, dating back to Roman times, and traces their development through the post-Civil War era. Dr. Benjamin Fitzpatrick discusses the history of the Lost Cause narrative after the Civil War, with special attention to the history of monuments in Kentucky. This background leads to a discussion of the role of monuments in public life, the nature of history and preservation, and questions about the role of narratives in identity.
